Products Unlicensed Radio 5.2/5.8 GHz Stratum 100 Full-duplex 100 Mbps Plus 2 x T1

Stratum™ 100strat100_lrg

High Capacity Wireless Transport for Ethernet and T1
As applications demand higher bandwidths, traditional solutions have not been up to the challenge. Intended for high speed data applications such as Corporate Intranets, Ultra-Broadband Metropolitan Area Networks and Multi-Megabit Internet Access, Stratum 100 allows users to break away from costly terrestrial lines. With full duplex 100 Mbps Ethernet bridging and two T1 links for voice traffic, Stratum 100 puts you in the driver's seat for your short haul, high capacity communications needs. In fact, Stratum 100 offers users the highest capacity for voice and data of any Unlicensed Band wireless product in the market today.

In contrast to traditional microwave equipment, Stratum 100 delivers this unprecedented high capacity with none of the negative factors associated with microwave. There's no worry about rain fades or poor bit error rates. Stratum 100 links perform as well as fiber, at a fraction of the cost and with far less time to deploy.

Key Features

  • Unlicensed U-NII band operation allows fast deployment and is immune to rain fades
  • Fiber class performance
  • Full duplex 100 Mbps LAN bridging - highest capacity available in its class
  • Dual T1 transport for TDM voice and data traffic without impact to LAN performance
  • Fully SNMP managed using industry standard platforms such as HP OpenView®

Product Overview
Wavespan's Stratum 100 is the first product operating in the U-NII bands to merge high capacity voice and data with ease of installation and operation. Stratum 100 incorporates a MAC layer Ethernet bridge for high capacity bridging of all Ethernet traffic types, including IP and Voice-over-IP. With autosense for 10/100 Ethernet and full or half duplex LAN support, combined with 802.1d Spanning Tree functionality, Stratum 100 requires very little in the way of initial configuration. In addition to the 100 Mbps full duplex bridging capabilities, Stratum 100 includes two DSX-1 interfaces for transport of voice between digital PBXs or other legacy T1 traffic. The DSX-1 interfaces operate equally well for channelized or unchannelized T1 applications.

Operating at distances up to 5 miles, Stratum 100 far outperforms ISM band radios and Infrared devices. And Stratum 100 is easily managed using SNMP or the native HTML Graphical User Interface.

Rapid Deployment
Wavespan's Stratum 100 operates in the newly allocated U-NII bands, with no FCC licensing requirements. Unlicensed band operation removes the waiting time involved with frequency coordination and license approval. Stratum 100 can be deployed immediately in contrast with up to six weeks delay for deployment of licensed band products. Additionally, if your needs change, Stratum 100 links can be relocated without applying for license changes.

Stratum 100 links use high-performance flat panel phased-array antennas. The small size (18" x 18" x 3/4") of the antenna and lightweight of the Outdoor Unit allow most installations to use a simple tripod mount, with no expensive installations of towers required.

Fiber Class Performance
For years, fiber has been the performance standard for communications media. Today, Wavespan brings the outstanding performance of fiber to wireless communications. Stratum 100 employs a concatenated Reed-Solomon (t=8) Forward Error Correction and Viterbi convolutional decoding to provide the highest degree of error correction, transparent to the user.

Because Stratum 100 operates in the 5 GHz U-NII bands, rain, fog and other weather conditions do not adversely affect operation. Operation in the 5 GHz bands also allows Stratum 100 to operate at greater distances than similar equipment operating in the higher frequency, licensed bands.

100 + 3 Mbps Full Duplex Throughput
Stratum 100 delivers 100 Mbps full duplex throughput for transport of Ethernet traffic, so the communication link is no longer the bottleneck in the network. In addition to the 100 Mbps for LAN traffic, Stratum 100 incorporates two DSX-1 interfaces for point-to-point transport of T1 traffic such as digital voice. Each T1 operates at full speed and does not share bandwidth with the LAN traffic, so all data streams receive the maximum throughput with the lowest latency. The high capacity makes Stratum 100 the ideal choice for bandwidth hungry applications like Multi-Megabit Internet Access, Voice-over-IP and real-time video and imaging.

Installation, Maintenance, Management and Monitoring
Designed for installation and maintenance by IT professionals, one or two people can install a Stratum 100 link in a matter of hours. Antenna aiming is accomplished without the use of costly test equipment and no special training is required for mounting or configuration.

Stratum 100 requires no maintenance or calibration for the life of the product. In fact, once the radio and antenna are installed, you can virtually forget them. Even software upgrades to the Outdoor Unit are downloaded from the Indoor Unit via the IDU-ODU fiber interface.

Day to day monitoring can be accomplished using SNMP or TELNET, manageable from any standard SNMP manager such as OpenView or SunNet Manager™. Industry standard MIB II and a Wavespan Enterprise MIB allow full access to parameters for SNMP management. Stratum 100 can send traps to multiple hosts to ensure operators of up to the minute statuses.

When using the integrated menu-driven configuration and management screens, both ends of the link are accessible from the main screen. This allows the operator to compare configurations at a glance and to access packet and radio statistics from a single interface. An integrated HTML GUI interface is also standard, allowing password-protected access from standard web browsers.

Summary
Stratum 100 is the first product in the unlicensed bands to offer full duplex 100 Mbps Ethernet transport which, when coupled with the dual DSX-1 inputs, allows it to serve both data and voice applications with industry standard interfaces. Combining ease of installation and management, Stratum 100 lets users enjoy the advantages of high capacity, high performance broadband communications without the high recurring costs of traditional broadband circuits.
