A Building Block for 802.11-based Wireless Networks
The RangeLAN802 8520 Access Point (AP) is an IEEE 802.11-compliant base station that
provides mobile users with fast and reliable wireless connectivity to Ethernet LANs. With
comprehensive management features, easy installation, exceptional durability and
reliability, and outstanding performance, the RangeLAN802 8520 Ethernet AP will exceed
your requirements for industrial-strength wireless networking equipment.
The design of the RangeLAN802 8520 AP is based on 2.4 GHz frequency hopping spread
spectrum (FHSS) technology, which was pioneered by Proxim and integrated into its
award-winning products. Operating at a data rate of 2 Mbps, the RangeLAN802 8520 AP is
ideal for providing fast wireless infrastructure to support bandwidth-hungry applications
in general office, education, industrial, transportation, hospital, and military
environments.
For the largest possible area coverage, Proxim XR technology boosts radio output power
to 400 mW*. XR technology can provide area coverage increases approaching 30% indoors and
100% outdoors.
Encryption to Fortify Your Security
The RangeLAN802 8520 AP guards your wireless network from being tapped by eavesdroppers.
Using RC4 encryption, the AP can be configured to convert cleartext data arriving from the
wired network into ciphertext before transmitting it over the wireless medium. At the same
time, the AP makes two authentication checks on all wireless clients that wish to gain
connectivity, using a secure challenge-and-response algorithm and consulting an access
list of approved clients. Any unauthorized access is logged. The multiple security
mechanisms work to prevent unauthorized access to both wired and wireless network
resources.
Network Management
Whether you are supporting a few wireless users locally or thousands in far-flung
locations, the RangeLAN802 8520 AP is rich in management features. They can be managed
wirelessly, remotely over dial-up lines, or centrally over the network from a management
center via serial cable, Telnet, or SNMP interfaces. The RangeLAN802 8520 AP includes
RangeLAN802 Manager, a web-based management tool that graphically displays diagnostic
information, network statistics and configuration parameters.
Full Wire Speed Filtering Optimizes Performance
With its built-in RISC processor, the RangeLAN802 8520 AP incorporates custom hardware
logic to filter traffic at full Ethernet wire speeds, keeping unnecessary traffic on busy
Ethernet segments from saturating the airwaves. A variety of protocol and broadcast
filters let network architects effectively eliminate traffic from the wireless medium.
Extend Your Coverage with Antenna Options
Depending on your environment, various antenna options can double or triple your coverage
area, thus lowering the cost of the network. Proxims unique Site Survey Tool helps
chart your coverage area effectively.
